The GreenSpring American Youth Harp Ensemble and Virginia Choristers are pleased to present Classical Jam!, Saturday, June 8 at 2:00 pm at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 503 Stuart Circle, Richmond, VA 23220. From Classical to Contemporary, from Celtic to Jazz, from Broadway to Baroque, each year the Classical Jam! features arrangements that defy the typical expectation of the harp and voice, and this year is no exception. GreenSpring International Academy of Music and GreenSpring Foundation is pleased to present Claire Jones, former Royal Harpist to HRH King Charles, and GreenSpring’s American Youth Harp Ensemble in concert for the US launch of their history-making album recorded in Abbey Road Studios, London. The concert will feature well-known tunes from the worlds of film, classical, Broadway, and traditional folk music. This once-in-a-lifetime event will be on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 2:00 pm at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 503 Stuart Circle, Richmond, VA 23220.
Artist Information:
Born in Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1985, Claire began her musical education at the age of seven. After excelling at the violin, piano and harp, she graduated as a harpist from the Royal College of Music with First Class Honours in 2007 and in 2009 graduated as an M.A. scholar from the Royal Academy of Music. Claire Jones was one of the first recipients of the Prince of Wales Advanced Study Awards in 2007 and 2008. This award recognised her as one of Wales' most outstanding young talents. In 2007, Claire was appointed Official Harpist to His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, a role she held until 2011, making her the longest serving Royal harpist to date. During this appointment, Claire regularly performed for the Royal Family and their distinguished guests at the Royal Palaces. In April 2011 she performed for the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at their wedding reception in Buckingham Palace. In 2008, Claire made her concerto debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and since then has gone on to perform as a soloist with some of the World's leading orchestras. Claire is passionate about promoting her instrument as well as performing, and regularly visits schools and communities to speak and demonstrate and is the director of the International Harp School based in Wales. This year will be the third year of the partnership between Summer Harp Institutes based in Richmond, VA with the International Harp School in Wales.
Cardiff born Chris Marshall graduated from Trinity College of Music with a BMus(hons) degree in 2003. Since then he has travelled extensively performing and composing internationally. Performing credits include the BBC symphony Orchestra, English National Ballet, London Mozart Players, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Chris has also worked on many productions in London's Westend and International touring show, these include; We Will Rock You, Wizard of Oz, Zorro, West Side Story, Evita, and Elf the Musical. Chris has a passion for playing instruments from all around the world, and it has resulted in seeing him perform on recording sessions for TV and film. He also performs as part of C2 duet with his wife, and former Official Harpist to HRH Prince Charles - Claire Jones. This unique duo has travelled extensively throughout the UK and in the USA. Chris balances his performance schedule with a flourishing career as a composer and arranger. His growing portfolio of compositions, includes the music for Heartstrings which was recorded for Classic FM/Decca in 2012 and was featured on Claire Jones’ album - Girl With The Golden Harp which reached number 3 in the classical charts. Recently, Chris has composed Bluestone and arranged many tracks on Claire’s latest chart topping album Journey. In addition, Chris has composed music for TV adverts including a track for Clogau, shown internationally, and for ‘Fishermans Friends’ currently shown in the USA. At the moment, he is working on his first film and TV series with Capture Studios in the USA along- side producing and arranging a new album with the Portuguese singer, Yolanda Soares.

The American Youth Harp Ensemble continues to captivate the audiences around the world as America’s premiere youth harp ensemble, well known for their musical sophistication, rich sound, emotional power, and imaginative programming of repertoire. The American Youth Harp Ensemble (AYHE) has brought world-class music to enthusiastic audiences in the U.S. and abroad through hundreds of performances, recordings, television and radio features on CNN, NBC, PBS and NPR affiliate stations. With 29 national and international tours to their credit since 1999, the AYHE made its international debut performing in the Maastricht Music Festival (Netherlands). In 2001, 2007, 2012 and 2016 the AYHE sold out Carnegie Hall and in 2013 the AYHE sold out Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York, two of the most celebrated concert halls in the nation. It has had other notable performances at the Edinburgh Easter Festival (Scotland), the Paris Music Festival (France), Salla Puccini (Milan), Salle Gaveau (Paris), St. John’s Smith Square (London), St. George’s Chapel (London), the United Nations (NY), the Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), the 34th and 38th American Harp Society National Conferences, and the Association for Music Personnel in Public Radio National Conference (the AYHE was showcased for music directors from National Public Radio affiliate stations across the US and have subsequently been broadcast nationally). The Ensemble has performed twice in the London Festival of Music (England), five times on the “State of the Arts” Concert Series at the U.S. Department of State, six times at the White House (DC), Advent Music Festival in Vienna and Salzburg (Austria), in feature concert in the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center, the Washington National Cathedral (DC), as the opening concert for the American Harp Society National Summer Harp Institute, for the King and Queen of Belgium, for the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors performing for such musical luminaries John Williams, Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and Jessye Norman, two tours to Austria and the Czech Republic and at the World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia. In 2016, they toured and performed in Boston, Vermont and renowned Canadian venues including the Basilica de Notre Dame in Montreal and Quebec City. In 2017, the ensemble concertized on tour in Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, in the Oslo City Hall (the location of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony) and in England and Wales. In 2018, they collaborated with former Royal Harpist Claire Jones, Composer/Percussionist Chris Marshall, and the Wales-based Claire Jones Harp School on an extensive East Coast Tour spanning from Virginia to Maine. Most recently, they were featured performers on a transatlantic crossing of the Queen Mary 2.

Singled out for her performances of uncommon communicative ability and exciting stage presence, Hidemi “Mimi” Minagawa emerges as a musical poet full of drama. Since her debut with the SAR Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007, Minagawa has won top prizes in multiple international competitions including the New York International Piano Competition, Seattle International Piano Competition, and the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition. As a full-scholarship recipient, Minagawa holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Peabody Institute, and Shenandoah University. Her prodigious teachers include Robert Roux, Logan Skelton, Boris Slutsky, and John O’Conor.
In the 2023-2024 season, Mimi is planning to participate in the Shenzhen Piano Concerto Competition in November. She also anticipates graduating from Shenandoah University in May, with the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance. Mimi is an avid collaborator and has performed and worked with numerous numbers of artists.
