The Instruments of the Orchestra

The Academy of Music offers high-quality educational presentations on the instruments of the orchestra to elementary and middle-school aged students. The objective of this series is to enhance sound in-school music programming through interactive performances by professional music educators. Most presentations address how instruments produce sound, create unique tone colors, and relate to other instruments in their orchestral family. In some instances, students have the opportunity to try out the instrument for themselves!

The Academy of Music faculty is composed of professional musicians, practicing artists, and expereienced teachers. They are graduates of some of the finest music schools in the world including The Julliard School, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Manhattan Conservatory of Music, Yale University School of Music, Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, and the Royal Northern College of Music (UK). They also hold positions with the Richmond Symphony, the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, and more. Artists-in-Residence and Visiting Artists are featured in events, concerts, and master classes throughout the year.

Through engaging performances, demonstrations, and discussion, the professional artistic faculty from the Academy of Music make learning about musical instruments an exciting and rewarding experience.
